Dream table or one of nightmares (Part 2)

WSOPE Europe 2008 The TV feature table on Day 3 of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event was a dream one for spectators but quickly earned the nickname, ‘The Table of Doom' from the players seated at it.

At around quarter past two, the table of doom suddenly became a worse prospect for those playing at it, when Janne Lamsa, the chip leader at that point, was seated next to fellow Finnish player, Patrick Antonius.

Lamsa's arrival meant that there were four huge stacks at the table that contained more than 200,000 chips and 1,584,500 in play between the nine players.

The very first hand Lamsa got involved in created the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Will Durkee limped in, in early position, hoping to see a cheap flop with 6h 4h. Gus Hansen, who had been hitting big hands all afternoon, also limped into the pot with Jd 9d, as did Sergei Feklisov holding Kc Tc.

The tournament chip leader looked at his cards briefly before deciding that his 9c 6c was strong enough to steal the 9,000 pot and raised 6,200 chips. Durkee made a lose call and the ever-aggressive Hansen followed suit although Feklisov tossed his cards into the muck.

The dealer dealt a flop of 9h Jc 7c bringing a flush draw for Lamsa, top-two pair for Hansen and absolutely nothing for poor Will Durkee.

The Finn quickly fired out a continuation bet of 18,000, which saw Durkee quickly fold but, if the footage is anything to go on, gave Hansen a tough decision to make.

‘The Great Dane' performed some theatricals for 30 seconds before tossing in a raise of 68,000, a raise that seemed to visibly shock Lamsa, who quickly sat bolt upright and checked his cards, possibly hoping that he hit the board harder.

After five seconds of deliberation the current chip leader announced that he was all-in, to which Gus Hansen instantly replied, "I call."

Hansen's top-two pair made him a 65/35 favourite over Lamsa, who would need to hit one of the remaining clubs to win the 418,200 pot, unaware that three of his flush cards had already been ion the hands of other players at the table.

The turn of the jack of spades completed Hansen's full house and rendered the river card useless, as it was now impossible for him to win the hand.

When the two of spades arrived on the river, Hansen raked in the pot to claim the chip lead, holding 465,000 chips.

The World Series of Poker Europe's table of doom had struck again.
