WSOPE Europe 2008

The cards were no kinder to the players on day 1b of the WSOPE Main event. One of the very first hands of the day saw the not so common confrontation of Aces against Aces.

Dan Shak held As Ad and Alan Smurfitt held the Ah Ac. In a hand that will be tied 97% of the time, the odds were thrown out of the window when the flop came all diamonds. Now Shak was a 36% favorite to win the hand and when the final diamond fell on the river both players looked very shocked indeed.

Doyle Brunson was eliminated early in the day by Justin ‘ZeeJustin' Bonomo. Brunson held 4h 4d and Bonomo held 3s 2s. On a board of 4c 5d 10s Doyle was a 73% favorite to win the hand, that was of course before the As on the turn giving Bonomo a straight. Doyle now only had a 23% chance of the board pairing, but it never came. Doyle graciously smiles and shakes the hand of Bonomo who looks slightly shocked at beating the legend.

On the feature table 2006 World Champion Jamie Gold was entertaining the crowd and TV cameras with his infamous table banter. In one hand, Gold limped for 200 in middle position with 3s 3d and another player limped with 7s Ah. Mike Macdonald, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, raised to 1000 on the button with Js Jc. Gold then re-raised to 3k and got one call from Macdonald.

Even before the flop, Macdonald was a 79% favorite and this was further increased to 86% on a flop of 10d 4c 7d. Gold checked and with the pot at 7,025, Macdonald bet just 2,500. Sensing weakness, Gold moved all in and after much deliberation, Macdonald made the call. The turn was a shattering 3h and this gave Gold a 95% advantage to win the hand. Macdonald found no help on the river and exited stating ‘Live players suck.'
