A hand is considered a bad beat when a player gets beaten by a hand that was a huge underdog to win. Here we look at some of the worst bad beats of last years WSOPE and how the players took it.
The man always accusing players of giving him a bad beat, Phil Hellmuth, both gave and received one in the same hand early in day one. Marco Traniello made an early position raise with A9 and Phil, already steaming, re-raised on the button with 7s5d. He was called by Thomas Fougeron in the SB who held 10s 10c and Marco folded. Fougeron checked dark, usually Hellmuth's move and on a flop of 2s 3d 7d Hellmuth checked behind. At this point Fougeron is a 74% favorite, but that all changed on the 5h turn card. Hellmuth turned into a 82% (roughly 4-1) favorite to win the hand but a rivered 3h counterfeited his hand, which he realised instantly jumping up and shouting in disbelief.
Phil would get his revenge however when he raised the button with 9h 2h and Fougeron, shortstacked and in the SB, moved all in for just over double Hellmuth's raise with Ac 4s. The flop camed Kh 7s Ks which made Fougeron a 75% favorite. The 5h on the turn however reduced his chances to just a 66% favorite and a rivered 6h gave Hellmuth the impressive suckout.
Phil had been tangling with another player during day one, Thor Hansen and dished out an impressive bad beat to him as well. Phil had started drinking by this point and seemed slightly tipsy, raising it up with 8h 5s, getting called by Thor with 9d 9c. At this point, Thor is a 87% favorite to win the hand, but this is reversed on a flop of 7s 5c 5h. Phil is now a 91% favorite to win the hand and bets right out, getting raised by Thor who calls a re-raise by Phil. Both check the 7d on the turn with Phil still a 91% favorite (because of tie possibilities). Phil announces that Thor's 9's are good, a great read, and this induces a small bet on the river which Phil instantly calls. Thor looks disgusted and Phil goes on to tell everyone how badly Thor played.
