On Day 3 of the WSOPE Main Event, Gus Hansen was the tournament chip leader with 349,400. Second in chips was Patrik Antonius with 283,200, more than enough to trouble Gus and he also had position being two spots to Gus's left.
Gus states that he was not looking to play big pots with Patrik as there was no need to put his tournament life at risk and that he felt Patrik should have thought the same. Patrik seemed more fired up stating that it was going to make for a good TV and that even though they are good friends he wont softplay anyone.
Gus felt that Patrik was really gunning for him and feels that it hurt them both as they are both very aggressive, both had big stacks and both wanted to be table captain. Gus states that every time he raised he felt Patrik was looking for any excuse to come over the top and even goes as far to say that Patrik was stupid for taking such risks. At first he did not realise how aggressive Patrik was playing towards him and ended up folding the best hand.
Gus opened from middle position to 5,000 with Qh 9c and on the button Patrik defended with 5s 5c. The flop came 2s As Qs and with the best hand, Hanson made a continuation bet of 5,600, getting called again by Antonius. The turn was a great card for Hansen, the Qd and he bet out 10,200. Patrik then made an aggressive play, raising another 31,800 and Gus folded.
After figuring out what Patrik was upto Gus decided to fight fire with fire and not let the play be taken away from him. Unfortunately for Gus he was not able to get lucky in any big pots. Gus described Patrik as being ‘In love with position' and that he tried to outplay Gus only when he had position on him.
Again from middle position Gus raised to 4,700 with Kc 9h and Patrik made the call on the button with 9c 8h. On a flop of 2c 9d 2d, Gus made a continuation bet of 6,600 with Patrik making the call. The turn was a safe 3s and Gus checked to Patrik who bet around 15k with Gus calling. The river was the 8c, a terrible cards for Gus who mumbled ‘Im not going to keep folding' and made a crying call when Patrik bet 40,000.
Gus would outlast Patrik who made a big move with 33, forcing Gus to fold 55 and losing to AK.
