WSOPE Europe 2008

The winner of the inaugural WSOPE Main Event was none other than Norwegian teenage sensation, Annette Obrestad but her achievement was no major surprise.

Even before the competition began, Annette's reputation for being a fearless, aggressive player preceded her after her long line of online successes over the past four years.

In July 2007, Annette famously won a tournament with 180 entrants despite not being able to see her hold cards!

She covered her screen with a post-it note and only looked at her cards once during the entire tournament, when she faced an all-in bet. When asked the purpose of playing blind, she replied, "to show just how important it is to play position and to pay attention to the players at the table.

Having amassed over $1.75m in online winnings, Annette decided to try emulating her success in live tournaments. Before the WSOPE, she had cashed in four events for total winning of over $38k, including a 5th place finish in the European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

Annette won the £10k WSOPE Main Event after a 2.25-hour heads-up battle with another online star, John Tabatabai. In the final hand, both players saw a flop of 7c6c5h and Annette instantly pushed all her chips in the middle.

Tabatabai quickly called, holding 6d5s but was devastated to see Annette held a pair of sevens for top-set. The two of clubs on the turn, followed by the queen of hearts on the river did not improve either hand and after a brief pause for a chip count, Annette was the WSOPE first Main Event Champion.

The £1m ($2.01m at the time of winning) first prize was the perfect birthday present for the diminutive Norwegian as she turned 19 the following day. The win not only made her the youngest ever bracelet winner, it also was the largest sum of money ever won by a female player, edging out the $2m won by Annie Duke at the 2004 Tournament of Champions.

Since her famous WSOPE win, Annette has continued her live success, finishing 2nd in the EPT Dublin to add another $431,184 to her career winnings, putting her third in the women's all-time winnings listings with earnings of $2,537,278.

Annette cannot play in the WSOP until 2010, due to the age restrictions in the state of Nevada, but when she can legally to take to the felt in Las Vegas, she will be there like a shot. You will most likely find her sat behind a huge stack of chips!
