2008 WSOPE re-writing the record books

WSOPE Europe 2008 The inaugural World Series of Poker Europe was responsible for the creation of numerous poker records and it carried on in the same vein in the £1,500 No-limit Hold'em Event of this year's series.

The £1,500 freeze out was a new addition to the series, designed to appeal to those without astronomical bankrolls at their disposal and to give everyone a chance of winning a coveted WSOP bracelet.

A total of 410 players decided to part with the entry fee, creating a prize pool of £615,000 to be distributed between the top 45 finishers, with first prize being worth a healthy £144,218. Over the course of four days, the field was whittled down to nine players and the final table was set.

At just 20-years of age, Adam Junglen had plans on joining the elite club of under-21 bracelet winners and becoming the youngest male WSOP winner, but it would be the Danish poker professional, Jesper Hougaard who would find himself immortalised in the history books.

Having won a bracelet in Event #36 of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas ($1,500 No-limit hold'em), Hougaard had the opportunity to become the first-ever player to win WSOP bracelets on both sides of the Atlantic.

Coming into the final table he was relatively short stacked and was eighth in chips but after twice doubling through Junglen, he found himself in a much healthier position and could now had room to play some poker.

Slowly but surely the players were eliminated and Hougaard eventually found himself heads-up with 58-year old, Fuad Serham.

After nearly nine hours of play, and 162 hands dealt, history was once again written at the WSOPE.

Fuad Serham raised to 120,000 holding Ac Kc, Hougaard moved all-in with his Ad Jd and Seham called.

The retired British player had the Dane dominated and was a 70/30 favourite to win the hand but an all-diamond flop meant that Serham was drawing dead and once the irrelative 7h and 9h fell on the turn and river respectively, Hougaard became the first player to win WSOP bracelets on both sides of the Atlantic.

When asked how he felt about being entered into the history books he simply replied, "Words can't describe how I feel. I'm ecstatic!"
